The Nosu Yi
Although the predominant population of China is composed of Han Chinese peoples (what most Westerners think of when they hear "Chinese"), China is in fact made up of many distinct ethnic groups, each with their own language, culture and history. With more than eight million people, the Yi people are one of China's officially recognized 56 "minority nationality groups." This Yi categorization can be seen as a collection of diverse ethnic groups and tribes, with many of the groups possessing distinct names, dress, customs and language.
The Nosu (or Nuosu) are a subset of this larger Yi categorization and reside primarily in the Southwestern region of China. Since many Nosu children live in remote mountain regions, they often suffer from a lack of access to adequate nutrition, clean drinking water and public health facilities. These children possess very few economic, social and educational opportunities.
